Surveys

What is Art?

From Plato to the present, the questions surrounding “What is Art?” have been the brunt of controversy and heated debate. There are as many answers as there are variants of the questions. To date, no definitive answer to all the myriad questions has emerged as a comprehensive, definitive, summation. This could be because each theory was put forth by an individual, or a small specialized clique. No one thought to ask everybody. As James Surowiecki states in The Wisdom of Crowds, “The simplest way to get reliably good answers is just to ask the group each time.”

Over the next several months, a series of short surveys will appear that will ask you questions to gauge your opinions on what is art, the nature of beauty, the role of the artist in society, etc...

In 2011 the entire results will be consolidated and presented on this website. Perhaps then we can state with some confidence what we, the people that view, make, buy, enjoy, and judge – truly think. Check back often, and thanks in advance for speaking up and letting your voice be heard.
